Fond Memories of Outcasts and Entertainers

Smoke-clouds billow and
I’m left to remember when,
back as a boy, how
magical it would feel, standing
there, popcorn in hand, amongst
likeminded awestruck souls,
watching, without a blink
of blurred focus, as the
death defying men and
women, dressed in sequins and silk,
dance the strings, jump the
ledge, trust the swinging
friend, hanging there
on loops, way up the
tented sky—and there were
horses, lions, and people
who look similar to how I’ve
felt inside.

There was so many more,
so many enchanting times, every
year, we’d go, as a family
to the greatest show—and
now, adulthood has slapped
me—the circus has since
left town, a while now, yet
it chose today to smoke today
it picked now, to ascend away—
and I remember how smiles
brought smiles and laughter caused
laughter—filling the gaps between
the gasps procured by fire eaters,
feats of strength and cannons—I remember
how it was then—but I also remember
how the clowns, painted as they were,
always made me feel a little bit sad
inside.

Holdfast and Breathe (A song of something)

Tuesday is here and with that comes every poets favorite day of the week. Join me over at D'verse, where Open Link Night is in full swing, where this week, the wonderful Hedgewitch will be hosting the festivities.  Stop on by for your poetry fix and while there share a poem of your own.  Cheers.

you’ve got something
I’ve got something
         we’ve got something…
US.
no matter the hardship,
no matter the peril
when all else fails
and there seems no right course to stay
i’ll remember still…

I’ve got something
you’ve got something
                  we’ve got something…
US.
however high the dangers rise,
 however small the blessings are
holdfast and breathe…
for after darkness, the light will come
ever shining, ever remembering…

we’ve Got Something
you’ve got something
         I’ve got something…
YOU.
the eyes can go blind
a deafening we may find
 touch might grow coarse
but in the end dreams fulfill,
altering the identity of tears

please, I pray you remember…

we’ve Got Something
I’ve got something
         you’ve got something…
ME.

Apocalypse Failed

honeycomb craters
unhindered by the
vacuous charm

footsteps—wagon-sized
circumference barren lots

molten display—
earth aflame

machismo died
in the face of wisdom

…and we cuddled close—
shivering silent, huddled still

above the dining wood,
plates filled, utensils primed

abdominals stifled
by sounds beyond

in what felt like lifetimes,
motion thawed locked bone

breakfast-long past cold,
devoured swift

deafness lingered minutes long
curiousity prompts opened eye

seeing a variety of ghosts
now walking the aftermath

nausea sickens the retraced path—
yet alive we stand; together still
